Creating a plan to increase child care capacity in your community involves a thoughtful and strategic approach. This step-by-step guide was created to help your coalition develop an effective plan.

Recognizing that each community has unique needs, this serves as a general framework to kickstart the planning process. It offers a range of steps, allowing you the flexibility to select those most relevant to your situation and providing valuable insights on where to begin.

Step 1: Needs Assessment

Engage key stakeholders, including parents, child care providers, local businesses, policymakers, and community leaders. Gather insights into their perspectives, concerns, and ideas. Establish a collaborative approach that involves everyone invested in the well-being of children.

Consider holding focus groups or listening sessions in which those invested in child care can share their stories and ideas.

Step 2: Stakeholder Engagement

Engage key stakeholders, including parents, child care providers, local businesses, policymakers, and community leaders. Gather insights into their perspectives, concerns, and ideas. Establish a collaborative approach that involves everyone invested in the well-being of children.

Consider holding focus groups or listening sessions in which those invested in child care can share their stories and ideas.

Step 3: Collaborate for a Solution

Choose the approach you want to pursue for initiating change. It’s essential to recognize that there might be multiple paths to consider. Therefore, it’s crucial to gather stakeholders before developing a proposed solution. This ensures that a diverse range of perspectives is taken into account before advancing any proposals.

Does your community need a new child care center? Is funding needed to support current child care programs with unfilled slots?

Step 4: Partnership Building

Forge partnerships with local businesses, schools, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. Collaborate to share resources, knowledge, and support. Establishing strong partnerships can enhance your ability to address capacity challenges effectively.

Are businesses in your community willing to add child care solutions into their operations? Are there leaders in your community who would like to join your coalition?

Step 5: Build Your Case

Engage in coalition discussions to express the significance of this change for the community and highlight the most compelling arguments supporting it. Collect relevant evidence and organize it in a clear and presentable manner. Collaborate with community partners to coordinate resources, preventing any potential duplication of efforts.

Step 6: Regulatory Support

Work with local authorities to streamline and simplify the regulatory process for establishing and expanding child care facilities. Advocate for policies that support the growth of child care capacity while maintaining high standards of safety and quality.

Step 7: Financial Assistance

Explore funding opportunities, grants, and subsidies to assist in the establishment and expansion of child care facilities. Provide information and support to providers seeking financial assistance, making it easier for them to meet regulatory standards.

Step 8: Community Awareness

Raise awareness about the importance of quality child care and the benefits it brings to the community. Develop marketing and informational campaigns to inform parents about available child care options and encourage them to utilize these services.

Step 9: Facility Expansion & Creation

Work with local real estate and zoning authorities to identify suitable locations for new child care facilities. Advocate for zoning changes that support the establishment of child care centers in convenient and accessible locations.

Step 10: Evaluation and Adaptation

Regularly assess the impact of your initiatives. Gather feedback from stakeholders and evaluate the effectiveness of your plan. Be prepared to adapt and refine your strategies based on the evolving needs of the community.

Step 11: Support Current Providers

Assist local child care providers by guiding them toward organizations such as Child Care Aware of Kansas, which offers support in various business-related services.

Encourage the use of technology to streamline child care services, such as Child Care Management Systems that offer online registration, communication platforms for parents and providers, and resource-sharing through digital platforms.

By systematically addressing these steps, you can create a comprehensive plan to increase child care capacity in your community, fostering a supportive environment for the well-being and development of children.
